Dr. Russell joined the NYTS faculty in 1978 as the Dean of Parish Ministry Programs.  In 1982 he was elected as President of NYTS and served in that position until 1992.  From 1992-1997 he served as Director of the D,Min program.  In 1997 he was elected as President and Professor of Pastoral Theology of the American Baptist Seminary of the West where he served until 2008.  Upon his retirement he was appointed Professor Emeritus of Pastoral Theology at ABSW.  In 2008 he returned to NYTS as Professor of Ministry Studies and Director of D.Min programs.  He has led and or assisted with the D.Min program since 2008 while continuing to teach in the areas of pastoral theology, ministry studies, and urban ministry.  He also continues to teach and preach throughout the Metro area and beyond.  He is the former Editor-in-Chief of The Living Pulpit, a quarterly journal on the art of preaching.
